The slang term "Whatta maroon" has been around since at least the 50's. Bugs Bunny used the term more than once in old Looney Tunes cartoons. It was indeed a takeoff on "moron" and no ethnic slurs were intended.

BTW, this thread is degenerating into personal attacks and flames. I, for one, wish it would return to the spirit which the title implies.

Since you obviously haven't heard of it, I will enlighten you as to the origin of the slang what a maroon. This is a Mel Blanc phrase. Bugs Bunny "What a maroon", or the ultimate "What an ultra maroon".
