Mike:

You almost scared me half to death with that post!

"big box makers" not knowing what DVD is and making comments like those you posted will soon be "small box makers".

----

I have seen plenty of ads with DVD computers in magazines. Did an online check of the big 3 and as I expected (thank god!) they do supply DVD computers.

(1) The multimedia PCs do have DVD options.
Dell:
dell.com
dell.com
Micron:
micronpc.com
Gateway:
gateway.com

----

(2) It is still early in the game for DVD. But this is the way things work in the PC world - first higher end, then mainstream and pretty soon CDs will be gone (give it 3 years, maybe 2 if we are lucky - ok 4-5 is realistic... - a little embellishment...)

----

(3) Those guys you spoke to were not only wrong about DVD not being available but I suspect they were wrong about the installation issue as well. Creative has been shipping an upgrade kit for probably 6-7 months now.

----

(4) It is still early in the game for LSI. They began shipping end Q1. Expects DVD and DCAM to be around 100 million this year (or next - need to make sure of this minor little detail!!!). But be patient - LSI should do well here - if they don't start the violin concerto...

----

Shane.

Mike, well, in the current Computer Shopper (just arrived)..there sure seem to be a lot of DVD offerings..Gateway, etc. I was just looking at the Cybermax "Home Theater" offering (under $2,000 with a 19 inch monitor) (check www.cybmax.com)..which not only gives you the DVD, but a connection to output to your regualar TV.. So, I don't think we are talking "VaporOfferings" for DVD.. But the push should come more towards Christmas, don't you think? TSP

JMD,

Not sure where you've been shopping, but HWP's mid and high-end PCs are shipping with DVD instead of plain CD-ROM. Same for CPQ and Sony. Mostly they seem to be in machines at the 1800+ pricepoint, though logically one should expect that they'll migrate into lower priced platforms in the next 6-8 months.

If you define "mainstream" as $1500 and lower, then DVD is not quite there. One more round of price cuts and it will be.

First of all to get the formalities out of the way--I'm a long-time 'lurker' who finally anted up the SI fee (before they finally institute the long-threatened price increase) only because I couldn't face the prospect of never having the opportunity to toss the occasional technically inept question at some of the obviously talented and insightful ( not to mention prolific and pretty funny ) individuals who haunt this thread. I can only hope that you will all bear with me should I ask the odd question which may seem irrelevant but would only be me trying to advance from the Stone Age. <gg>

As to PC DVD, as it happens, I was at the local Computer City last Sunday and noticed a recent arrival among the PC games.. Tex Murphy-Overseer by Access Software and lo and behold, on the front of the box, the magic words: "Both DVD and CD-ROM versions included." The salesman I cornered advised that it was the first PC game they had ever received in DVD and, by the way, Computer City had just cut the price of the DVD add-on/conversion kit by about 1/3. The price, including installation and taxes, was about $595...don't panic!!!..Canadian or roughly $420 U.S....soooo, if we, in the frozen Great White North already have DVD at the ready, ya gotta know it's widely available.

Not a 'sleek lion' nor a 'mangy bear'...just 'Wolf' (thank goodness there's a vet on the premises)...: )
