andy,

<I know several people who are waiting for Win98, 100MHz bus, and Deschutes before they upgrade. Do you think this shortfall could be because of that, or is it not so easily explained away?>

I am one of those people waiting (especially for the 100MHZ bus). A friend who's been looking to buy a new computer called for advice this morning. After a brief conversation, he is also now in waiting mode.

andy - Re: " Do you think this shortfall could be because of that, or is it not so easily explained away?"

Hard to say - perhaps.

Another contributing factor is probably the constant, continual decline in PC system prices for the past 12 months.

I would assume that quite a few potential buyers just decided to wait until the PC system prices reached zero.

Looks like their wait may be over soon.

This is going to be carnage.

Paul

It's hard to say how much of what Intel is seeing is distribution channel shifts and adjustments vs. actual end-user demand, also impacts of AMD sales success and effects of reduction in CPU ASP.

Like you, I am waiting for one more price cut, for the PII 266 to get down in the $200 range, before buying (actually, probably building) a new PC. Also, waiting for the PII 350 and the BX chip set, MIGHT go that way depending on price but it will probably be more than I want to pay, so I will probably go PII 266. I do know of LOTS of people who are upgrading PC's there is a tremendous upgrade cycle in progress. But, frankly, I expected that to have a positive impact on Q1, so I am hesitant to predict a strong Q2 with a Q2 positive surprise. It is possible, however, given the introduction of the 100 MHz bus, price cuts and hopefully Win98.
