The $700 computer is thrown away in three years. The UPS/whatever is good for 20. It's hard to justify not having one if you live in FL or other lightning-prone territory.

BTW, this thread, which once was populated by long-termers looking for good entry prices, seems to be dominated by people who let the market swing their moods. Maybe they need protection from market shocks? <g>

Shane, it's not so much protecting your PC, but protecting your
data with a UPS. I have an APCC and recently it went into
action while the lights went out. I was posting on SI and didn't
miss a beat. While that wasn't a mission-critical application,
I could have been doing my tax return.<g>
But you're right, people who just use a cheap PC to play games and
surf the web might see little need for a UPS.

Shane,

With the shelves stocked with low-priced PC's...most families(esp w/ school age children) will opt to buy and have more than one unit at home. IMHO UPS may be a reach...printers and consumables however may see an ever increasing demand.
