<Is there any reason why K6-3Ds would be more
desireable than a K6 other than the 3D instructions?>
Lots of reasons:

1. Low power consumption - no problem with heat removal
in desktops;

2. Speed - must be 266 at least, I hope for 300 typical;

3. 100MHz bus - additional boost in performance; 100x3 K6 will
match the P-II-300 in all applications;

4. the hew 3D instructions can be used as a general purpose
FPU. They can replace the old FPU stack-oriented
crapola, with tremendous boost in floating performance;

5. At reduced frequency, K6-3D is a straight candidate
into portables;

Is this worth to pay a bit more? I think so.

Jim,

It is my understanding that the FPU on K6-3D will be improved and the 3D extensions will be supported in Direct-X 6.0.

James, re:<Is there any reason why K6-3Ds would be more desireable than a K6 other than the 3D instructions?>

I think the integer MMX performance is improved, but otherwise, no, except higher clock speeds of 300 or 350 MHz. With 100 MHz mobo, K6-3D should have equivalent speed to Pentium II at same clock speed. If AMD can get 25% of the good chips to run at 350, it will be a major coup, but at this point I doubt it.
