Michael, "Let me ask you this. Do you think we should change the laws and allow mothers and sons to marry each other? How about brothers and sisters?" What do marriages between mothers and sons or brothers and sisters have to do with homosexuality? I don't understand the link, unless it is to say that one is as bad as the other. As recently as 20 years ago or so, it was against the law in many places for a black person and a white person to have a child together. And 40 years ago in many places, blacks and whites weren't allowed to drink from the same water fountain. We have to be very careful about our "feelings" that something is "repugnant", and try to discover reasons for them before we think that they should be imposed politically on the general populace. (Frankly, to say that "Because the Bible says so" doesn't qualify as a reason; among other problems, there just are far too many different interpretations of the Bible to rely on that in a pluralist society such as our own.) This certainly involves all sorts of irritations, but the alternative is too often ghastly. Did anyone see 20/20 last night? Story about 2 gay public school teachers, one male one female, who were thought of as wonderful teachers until it was discovered that they were gay. One was hounded out of his job and later died of a heart attack, the other was relieved of various coaching duties (after all, she was a bad influence on the girls) though not her job. Just the tip of the iceberg--such discrimination happens all the time. The piece included an interview with a minister who believed that no gay people should be allowed to teach children. As if pedofilia & being gay were synonymous. Or perhaps he was worried that if kids got to know someone gay who was an admirable person they might not be able to judge them negatively.
