John Mansfield's MSFT/WNDR/TAVA observation
Message 3792159

Microsoft will evolve the infrastructure upon which we build industrial automation software that bridges the gap of information shared between the office and the factory. As a result, Wonderware will capitalize on Microsoft technologies to effect standard ways of exchanging data'

Small example of Factory Floor / MIS integration the MSFT/WNDR way

FURTHER WONDERWARE UPGRADES FOR PG BISON

Pietermaritzburg based board manufacturer, PG Bison, has expanded its industrial automation
implementation as part of the on-going Capacity Development Programme by upgrading its
Wonderware InTouch workstations to Windows NT platforms and by acquiring Wonderware
Industrial SQL Server, the real-time relational database for plant and business information
management. Industrial SQL Server, which incorporates Microsoft SQL Server, will be used for
historical logging of all plant events, trending and fault reporting.
The objective to obtain
uniformity between shifts will be achieved by using sophisticated reporting tools to balance out
process inequalities and manual errors. PG Bison will implement the upgrades in house, which
includes a major re-vamp to of the existing control room.

USE MICROSOFT WORD FOR MIS REPORTING

You won't believe how easy it is to use Microsoft Word for Management Information Systems
reporting.
You define a report using MS Query and any SQL database (including InDustrial
SQL Server) and then save it as a template (*.dot file). When you create a new document
using the template, it simply runs the report.

'HP has created its own Java variant for noncomputer devices such as printers.'

MSFT / SUNW war: another battle won by MSFT. IMO significant for the MSFT/WNDR alliance on the factory floor is the following:

'HP has created its own Java variant for noncomputer devices such as printers.'

COMMENTARY: JAVA CAN BE A CONTENDER--IF SUN LETS IT

Ever since Sun Microsystems Inc. invented Java, a computer language for
creating programs that run on computer networks, Chief Executive Scott G.
McNealy has boasted that it would roast Microsoft Corp. Now, it's Java
that's getting roasted--and not just by the software giant. On Mar. 20, Java
partner Hewlett-Packard Co. broke ranks. Accusing Sun of keeping too tight
a rein on developing new versions of Java, HP has created its own Java
variant for noncomputer devices such as printers.
