What would you suggest for a complete system for under $1,000 without monitor? Or should I wait until I can afford to spend more? Thanks in advance, your opinion is valued and appreciated.

Paul,
Thanks or your advice to Doug. I was about to buy a refurbished Compaq Pentium II-300 box but decided to go with a new Cyrix system because there must be something wrong with the Pentium II...
Thanks again, Jim

Doug, my advice to you is spend the extra $200-$300 and buy a PII-233. IBM just lowered their price to under $1100 for the business market and you can probably get one for home for the same price. Don't waste your time with clones if you can get the real thing. Happy purchasing!

Hi Paul. In a previous post, you made a reference to an "inferior piece of merchandise". Now, I may be wrong, but it seems that this was directed at the K6 system that Doug was considering. If this is so, could you please explain why you believe this is an inferior piece of merchandise. I would guess that what you consider to be the superior piece of merchandise (most likely for home use) would be something like a 333 PII system with a "big" hd and "lots" of ram. If this is so, about how much would that run. If not, what would you recommend. I also noticed in another post that you spent 4900 dollars on a drum sander. This is about 20% of the average americans annual income. For the sake of all reading these posts, would you be so kind as to give us an idea of your income. I think this info would help people understand where you are coming from when you make statements regarding pricing and value. Thanx!
