>>Duncan, I actually thought Celine's performance was not up to her usual high standards. I taped the show and edited parts to preserve. Celine's performance made my cut. I like her better when she controls her enormous voice, otherwise she can come off like a female "Meatloaf". I thought she did very well - though I think we can agree that even on an off day, that Acadian has no contemporary peer. >>I watched the entire show and thought the "class photo" of former Oscar recipients was painful to watch. That's the stuff I love and save! Some really bad plastic surgery - Lee Grant unable to smile and sporting "oriental" eyes- both indicators of botch jobs. I didn't know Claire Trevor was still around. Jennifer Jones didn't look too much different than she did 25 years ago in The Towering Inferno . Shirley Jones has class, who'd have thunk that she copped her Oscar by playing a mona in Elmer Gantry ! I met Patricia Neal at my Northwestern graduation - she looked very good last night too. Wish Faye Dunaway worked more. Gregory Peck looked very seedy. >>Speaking of Ben Hur, Charlton Heston looked particularly uncomfortable. Another Northwestern grad, I thought he looked very good. I think the unease that you detected is the fact that he didn't smile, he just nodded and pursed his lips in a manly gesture. Would you be happy being seated next to Ratso Rizzo ? Julie Christie is still a babe and a Darling . >> I think the awards were justified. Especially my son's. OK, I guess I'm missing the obvious, fill us in. (I didn't watch the show, I just took the best parts out afterwards.) Btw, the montage of "greats" who have passed on is always hard - especially since the likes of Burgess Meredith, Robert Mitchum and James Stewart are not to be found today. I'll bet most didn't even know who Billie Dove was. Lillian Gish died a few years ago too. Very few of the "Golden Age" generation is left - de Havilland, Fontaine, Young. Nothing can be done about that. It's just so depressing that the Barrymores that are being drawn are of the "Drew" caliber. Very depressing.
