>>I gotta say here that if anybody got an E-ticket ride from the media it was President Bush. Remember son Neil and the savings and loan mess just before we went to the gulf? His state of residence with reference to his taxes received no more play than is President Clinton's, at least to my memory, and I read a lot.

Holly:

That Neil stuff came out in 1988, as I remember one correspondent chasing Neil about the convention floor with a microphone. Bush's residence got much media play and Clinton's has gotten absolutely none that I have seen.

As for Bush - he'd never have become anything near President under his own power. I recall Nixon being surprised that Reagan offered it to him, to him Bush was one of those penny-loafer Republicans you put in jobs where you don't want or expect much ever to be done.

I remember "the incident" that occurred in November-December 1991 when Bush went to California to get Reagan's endorsement. Reagan not only did not endorse him, but they had the gates to his residence papered over so that no camera could get a shot of them together that Bush might use.

I also remember George Will (who loathed Bush) saying that in 1988 Americans voted for the closest thing to a continuation of Reagan available and that was why Bush was the first sitting VP to be elected directly to the Presidency since Martin Van Buren. Will went on to say that in 1992 Americans would, for the first time, judge Bush on his and not Reagan's record.

The result? Poor George. Bush did worse than Barry Goldwater and any sitting President (including Hoover!) since Taft.

Thank you George. Slick was your gift to a grateful nation.
