Thanks for making that point Colin. While yes, the IRS has abused their authority over the years, and made life miserable for countless people, most of us lose sight of where the problem lies. And that is with our elected officials, whom we don't hold accountable for the laws that THEY pass.

Every single tax law on the books was drafted and passed by our House and Senate politicos, and passed into law by the President's signature. And the majority of those laws have their genesis in the special interest lobbyists that have an agenda to benefit their clients. Indeed, the laws are often actually drafted (written) by the lobbyists, and sometimes pass through the labyrinth unchanged.

We have no one to blame but ourselves for the tax laws. They are passed by OUR elected officials.

Colin,

<<Yeah, That Tax act scared a lot of people. Maybe that's
what the republican's wanted? Re-election is coming near,
and they are pointing fingers at the IRS! Never do I hear
the republican's say that CONGRESS TELLS the IRS to be
Big & Mean toward people.(g) Colin>>

I should have guessed that you are a LIBERAL! Why is it
that for 40 Years of a Democrat controlled Congress, there
were never any IRS hearings to investigate abuses against
innocent taxpayers? Because they used the IRS to intimidate
American taxpayers into just shutup and pay their taxes and
and try not to take too many of those legal deductions or
we may have to AUDIT YOU!Not to forget those willing CPA
accomplices that say "i wouldn't take that deduction if
i were you, as it may send up a RED FLAG..sound familiar? Now
we have Democrat Bill Clinton using the IRS and FBI to audit
and investigate anyone that goes against his liberal policies..
.remember those poor people that worked in the White House
Travel office that wanted to keep their jobs...but, since
relatives in Arkansas figured the White House would be a
great place to work and they loaded up their belongings and
moved in with that jerk(sung to the tune of the Beverly Hill-
Billies ;-), they were fired and audited by the IRS, not to
mention many, many other Americans that Clinton wanted to
keep quiet, imo. How about all those FBI files on over 200
Republicans..kind of makes Watergate seem like childsplay
by comparison, as that was only eavesdropping! Whether you
like it or not their will be more IRS hearings to make it
stop threatening and in some cases fabricating evidence
against honest taxpayers.

Speaking of being honest..Why don't you admit that you
don't have the type of friendly and positive personality
to make it as a financial planner when the Flat Tax becomes
a welcome reality? Now you have a captive audience that you
can bark at in a condescending manner...because the current
7 Million word Internal Revenue Code is impossibly complex,
economically destructive to small businesses and private
investors, and morally unfair to hard working a productive
people that are willing to work harder and take higher
risks so that their children will have an easier life, but
a 10 line Flat Tax of only 17%, a baseline of no taxes
on the first $33,000 of income for a family of four, and
do schedules needed as there will be no Capital Gains
(double)tax, and they would no longer need to have to look
at you or listen to your attitude. By the way, My CPA is
in the Bahamas this week, he left early this morning,
after having finished up the last few returns that he
had to do for friends..not that he needs the money of
course, with his stock and real estate investments...he
doesn't worry about when the Flat Tax is a reality! How
come you are not on vacation...it is April 16th, not the
infamous APRIL 15th? I just wonder how long it will be
before American Taxpayers wake up and get sick of this
7 million word tax code, 7 years of saving receipts,
worrying about the infamous IRS audit, and see that the
largest lobby against the Flat Tax are tax preparers
and real estate agents- who don't realize that the more
money that people are left to keep the more houses they
will buy, not to mention have for helping others!

Shawn

Colin,
Just wait, when all the revenues come in to the IRS and there is a windfall all the Congressmen will be slapping themselves on the back...never mentioning they made it off the backs of the ever so docile taxpayer. That schedule D may yet bring some major reform along with the Year 2000 fiasco.
