Let me give you an example of something which happened to a close friend. My friend was promoted to run a division within a large corporation I happened to represent as well. He inherited a secretary who was rumored to be, kindly put, inattentive to her duties(she was lazy as hell). The division was in sorry shape when my friend took over; bloated, inefficient and demoralized. Within six months he had the place turned around and humming. He frequently told me the job was made more difficult by the total lack of assistance he got from his secretary. He warned her repeatedly but she did not improve. Unfortunately as he had bigger fish to fry he did not carefully document her many deficiencies. Once he had his charge under control he decided to remedy the situation with the secretary feeling he had been more than fair with her and not wishing to waste the time to build the paper trail I advised him to have on hand. He mentioned in a management meeting that he was contemplating this action. Unbeknownst to my friend, one of the junior management people in his division and present at this meeting was boinking his secretary. Naturally he told her of my friend's plans and tipped her off when the pink slip was coming. The day before she was to be let go, she called personnel and informed them that my friend was repeatedly hitting on her and had told her that unless she went out with him he would fire her. Naturally, he was suspended pending an investigation. She filed her complaint with the state's Human Rights Commission and the EEOC. The guy who was sleeping with her backed her story. My friend was toast and lost his job. It was reported in all the papers so that he couldn't get another. Coincidentally after two years the truth became known when the young lady confided to another young woman who was also employed by the company. Unfortunately, the papers have never covered that story and my friend's career was ruined. Scary but true. JLA
