Was Yiddish a language that was developed from German for a particular reason in recent times to communicate amongst the Germans so they would not understand, or has it been around for hundreds of years? In Toronto there are many Jamaicans who speak a language they call "Jive". It is a variation of English that I believe was created to disguise their conversations from others. If you have never heard it before, it is quite interesting. At first, it sounds like an entirely different language, but if you pay attention you will notice that most are English words that are pronounced differently to change their sound from regular English. I am not sure whether "Ebonics" is the same as "Jive". An example is a derogatory expression like calling someone a "bumba clat" which means "bum cloth" and is self explanatory as to its insulting nature. When my brother and I were younger, we developed a language that was a mixture of French, English and Arabic to disguise our conversations from others. It was not easily understood by any of those native speakers as we exaggerated certain syllables and sounds to obfuscate the meaning. It was amusing to us and took many years to evolve. It was intended in good natured fun.

Jack, you did pretty well for a Goy! One correction -- a "schmuck" is identical to a "putz", -- a penis, and the diminutive form is shmekel. Vulgarisms like these were routinely broadcast on the air because the censors didn't know what they meant. It is a shame Yiddish is dying out. It is a wonderfully expressive language. There used to be a vibrant theater community based entirely in Yiddish aimed of course at Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. The destruction of European Jewry by Hitler and his minions is of course responsible for this vacuum. TTFN, CTC
