The government now share gambling profits with the Indians. They will soon harvest the bulk of profits from tobacco. Why not add in drugs and prostitution? Wholesome fun, safe cigarettes, clean sex workers and revenue, revenue, revenue. Sounds like a winning ticket. Lets do it for the children.

>>It helps also to think of this in terms of the Prohibition Era. There really is no difference.

Oh really? How about 2,000+ years of Western civilization? That's a VERY big difference: alcohol use predated this nation and there was a tradition of social drinking so prohibition faced a far far greater obstacle than we face with maintaining a prohibition against illegal drugs.

Besides, the tobacco story shows that if anything, we're moving towards stricter substance control rather than looser.

I'm not a believer in "vast crowds" of potential addicts. But exactly how many do you think there needs to be before legalization's cost is too high. My threshold is very low. I may be the last such person on earth if you are right but fear of the law has always kept me from trying drugs. I'm in my fourth decade and I have never even TRIED marijuana, LSD, hash, cocaine or any of the other drugs which were popular when I was (a little) younger. I've never smoked tobacco either. I have been known to have a beer from time to time. Point is for people like me (maybe not many) the illegal, illicit nature of those drugs keeps me away. JLA
