Jack, the smoking debate is really polarized, I would agree. However, I basically think everyone has the right to fresh air without any cigarette smoke in it. I think this is going to continue to be a battle ground, as fewer Americans smoke and lose their tolerance for others smoking around them.

Do you believe the mainstream medical reports and studies about the dangers of second-hand smoke? Anyone who does would have a bit of a problem extending their tolerance to people smoking around children, or people with respiratory illnesses, or in the workplace, and for many people it is just unpleasant to eat in restaurants where people are smoking. There has already been one child custody case I am aware of, where a child was removed from the custody of its smoking mother and placed with the father. The mother had refused to stop smoking around her child, and as I recall the child had some illness that was worsened by smoking.

I am very tolerant and understanding about human weaknesses in general, and would never march over and lecture a smoker, for example, although that has happened to me. Even a priest did it once!! I do think family members have the right to lobby heavily for their relatives to quit smoking, however. But I would never be part of a campaign to totally outlaw cigarettes. I do know it is extremely hard to quit smoking, and I have a lot of sympathy for people who are trying, or know they would just never be able to do that. I do think smokers need to smoke where it bothers no one, however.
