Well, just so you don't go getting on some kind of power, "men control the genetic destiny of humankind" trip, women begin with 2,000,000 eggs in their ovaries. Now we may only get to release one or two at a time but the variety is there....
And I picture a sort of ovarian juke box. And that little arm reaches in and picks out the egg selection of the month. It's up to you to put the quarter in and play the song.
(Do you think that's where the line "We could make beautiful music together" comes from?)

Genetic variability:
It's like men and women start with the same deck, the same basic set of twice twenty-three chromosomes. The woman's deck is cut&shuffled, waht, five times? to yield a hundred thousand permutations on how the forty-six cards get arranged. A hundred of these get to walk down the Fallopian aisle, unless you took those "let's have puppies" drugs.
The man's machinery takes the same deck, and doesn't stop shuffling. Over&over again. The avg. hundred million little half-guys are, like fifteen times shuffled? And we get to do it all over again for the next time.
And with May coming up, we get to practice our hand at cutting&shuffling.

I need to second penni regarding control of genetic destiny. Okay. So the maternal deck doesn't get the same sort of continuous randomization the man's gets. But (in a contemplative moment, "oh nothing Honey"), take a close look at your significant other. That deck that didn't get shuffled that much, it's been out of the box a long time. It's just as far from Ace, Deuce.... Jack Queen, King, of Hearts. Spades. Diamonds. Clubs. (Peel off the two jokers, cuz if you forget someone will have like a trisomy or something) as your own thoroughly randomized packet of info.

Just nobody say "Gin!" please.
