David, I disagree with your guess: My guess is Eddie is trying to get us all to dump our DELL and put the money into CPQ to try and drive it's price up.

I think he's trying to rationalize his investment in Compaq, so his approach is to show how well Compaq is doing compared to Dell. He can't bring himself to recognize that Dell is outperforming Compaq using just about any metric you'd care to use, so he latches on to nonsense like revenues per employee (and even there it turns out that he may be wrong).
