More Caramel with your flan?

A slide show from LSI Logic about the Carmel DSP:

(esp. noteworthy: this likely fills in a very important gap in LSI's base of cores, open architecture might translate to lower prices, one target is potentially very large xDSL market)

Shane.

Wizard, in a related vein (no injection intended), there are some articles over on the DPMI thread, one of which alludes to the fact that any sudden demand for chips would be met by an inability of the photomask folks to supply the masks -- especially the phase shift masks for the esoteric, fine line width DUV stuff. DPMI just set up a relationship with Hoya, of Japan, one of the largest of the phase shift mask providers, but actually it appears hasn't been enough capital spending by the mask suppliers to support the nexty move to .18u (according to the articles)..
Since you like to consider the economic effects of that kind of scenario, do you have a feel for the impact of an inability to burn the chips (due to lack of masks) in the face of a sudden demand surge.. ((let me know if you can't locate those articles, and I'll get off my duff and link them... TSO
