Calling for your cert's does not do what you think, as I understand. I believe Dusty is right.

Furthermore, having your cert's in your own possession limits their liquidity. Can't trade em if circumstances change... at least until your broker registers that they have received them back.

However,I was told by my broker that none of the shares I hold in my account can be loaned out without my expressed approval. In order to loan them out the brokerage house has to get a signed statement from the shareholder and is paid for the use of the shares as I understand it. If there is an honest broker (no insult intended here) among us can you address this issue and if I am in error please correct me.

I believe that's true for a cash account. Margin accounts are different. So instead of taking delivery of certificates, it's much easier to call and ask your brokerage to move your shares from your margin to your cash account. That's how the KTEL short squeeze on April 20 took place, for the most part: people shorted and then, three days later, which was settlement day, found out there were no shares available to short. So they had to cover (Joe Kernen on CNBC explained the margin-cash account differences as applied to KTEL).

I have no idea whether the rules are different for BB stocks. Actually, I have no idea whether I'm right about any of this.
