Paul,

Did you forget?

Actually, we've had two engineers as President in the last 70 years - Hoover and Carter.

I don't think that the evidence shows that we get a better quality politician when an engineer is elected.

I'm uncertain as to what the best background is. Other than character, a characteristic evidently not valued by a majority of Americans any longer, exposure to the real world of employment is one of my own personal qualifications for a politician.

Barry

Paul and thread,

Looks like Dr. Barrett is willing to assume a higher profile in managing WS and investors' relation.

Intel reiterates sees earnings up in H2

JOHANNESBURG, May 4 (Reuters) - Intel Corp, the world's largest computer chip manufacturer, on Monday repeated its forecast that earnings would bottom out in the second quarter and then pick up.

''We see no change to our on-the-record comment that the second quarter would be the trough and that we expect a pickup in the second half,'' said president and chief operating officer Craig Barrett.

Barrett, in Johannesburg for the Africa Telekom '98 fair, was addressing investment analysts on the buoyant outlook for world computer markets going forward into the next century.

Intel last month reported basic earnings per share down to $0.78 from $1.21 a year previously on net income of $1.3 billlion, down from $2.0 billion.

Paul, Re: "I'm not certain that it is a requirement for politicians to have a brain."

One thing I can say about Clinton and Bush is that they recognize the importance of high-tech. One or the other or both visit Silicon Valley several times a year, and quite often they have dinner with electronics industry execs. The California Cafe in Los Gatos hosted one of them three or four years ago. Of course, Bill now has Chelsea to visit at Stanford, also.

In contrast to the current Pres., V. Pres., there was a woman who held a key position during the Bush administration (forget her name) that, when someone was talking the importance of the computer chip business, said "Computer chips, potato chips, what's the difference." Rocket scientist, huh?

<< An engineering/technical background requirement for politicians exceeds all hope
for a Major Miracle.

It will never happen.>>

Well, one can dream. :-) I kind of thought it was a minor miracle that we somehow elected an actual robot for VP. < g >
