<<Floppy doesn't matter.>>

I was just talking with a PC guy who was rather impressed with iMac. I noted that there was no floppy.

He said, why should it need one? He went on to say that there are currently hub-like devices that connect to the USB and provide COM, Serial, and Parallel ports.

All you need in a school setting is to have one of those handy on the netwrok and on the rare occasion when someone needs to put something on a disk, they can share the floppy!

...continuation of previous post.

Our college in planning to install ethernet ports in dorm rooms (hopefully this summer) so students have access to the net and email.

I'm writing an application so students can pick up assignments, "hand-in" homework and do quizzes over the net. Again, no need for floppy.

More on floppies.

1. When I E-mail attachments to a well known university in the UK they tend to have a very hard time with it unless I am very careful how I do it.

2. Most of the academic journals requiring electronic copy require you to send them a disk.

3. I get disks all the time from other people. Maybe they are classed as Luddites but they have a resistance to E-mailing the material. This includes abstracts submitted for conferences etc.

4. Many textbooks have floppies with data etc. included with them. If you don't have a drive you can't use them.

Just 4 more examples. Expandibility is a complete non-issue for a computer in this price class but a floppy isn't.
