Re: "Presents a very good argument for SCSI being around for a long time due to 'backward compatibility' issues with the installed SCSI base, and the complexity associated with switching architectures."

In the short history of PC's, hard disk drive interfaces have gone from (+/-, I'm doing this from memory) ST-506, MFM, RLL MFM, ESDI, SCSI, fibre channel (not to mention IDE, ATA, UDMA). When was the last time you saw a new MFM drive? ESDI? So why will the "complexity associated with switching architectures" intervene to save SCSI from a similar fate?

JMHO, of course.

Disclaimer: I am an Adaptec shareholder.

Saw the advertisement for Adaptec's IEEE 1394 PCI card advertised in PC Connections; a catalog retailer. The card is available and selling now and will work with the current non-existent IEEE 1394 hardware products. 62 devices can be hooked up to it and all you need is a PCI slot. Now tell me there is not huge future demand for this card with all of the slots and bays being max'ed out on the whole installed base of PCI computers out there now; this thing is going to be dynamite! It is coming; no question about that and Adaptec is going to be THE major player in it. We might dive due to the shortterm outlook, but there is a future and it is bright. This is a safe stock to average down in as far as I am concerned. I plan to pick up my other half position and maybe even more if the price gets really cheap. Cheap would be a P/E of 8ish; a price in low teens. I haven't calculated the relationship because it is a moving target. WDC had a low P/E until it went up due to losses, so the future is what counts here, not the present.

Larry, I think that ADPT is extremely attractive at these sub 17' prices. Slob believes it could reach a "ridiculosly " low price in the mid 15', and few on the thread (probably those that said it will never breach 20 <G>) have now set new targets in the 10-11 area, which in my opinion would be "ludicrously" low price. However, I would not say categorically, "NO", and this since it will not be the first time I have seen stock priced at ludicrous levels. The markets are manic/depressive, they get to ridiculously high prices (YHOO, AMZN and I will not mention fly by nights such as KTEL and AND from the past), and then they also priced MRK at 29 during the height of Hilary's attacks on the pharmaceuticals, and CCI at 10 during the fears of the "latin exposure" and few other doosies. So, 10, unlikely, but not impossible. Right now, I would say ADPT is going on my "watch closely" list. I am waiting for some "irrational inexuberance" or fear to evolve, but it surely is extremely tempting.

As for my "watch closely list", I must say it has not been successful in the last few months, I had two oil P&E on that list and they went through the expected "irrational fear" wringer and they are still lingering at the same irrational low levels <VBG>.

<< Oh, wait a minute.............we are talking about ADPT here, the stock
that only goes down, probably won't exist in a few years. May buy this
loser @ $10 - $11 per share 80% off its high.......NOT.>>

If nobody sells, how the hell do your create a superb buying
opportunity.
