Asia's nuclear coming of Age.

Hey Worswick:

Message 4528636

BTW as you very well know some of the cities you mentioned were already seats of power and governance way before the Brits, sure they gave some English names but we are dealing with that aren't we???? I must admit they put up some buildings besides giving them English names. However I don't think they brought any money from 'home' to build the cities. As a matter of fact if we could get all the plundered loot from them we would have been in pretty good shape if you ask me.

As for the imminent and present danger of India being dismantled and disintegrated a la CCCP etc,I would like to say your pessimism might be a bit unwarranted and might be even out of place.I remember us having the same discussion before, you taking the same stance and I the opposite.

India exits in the minds of 1 billion people. And unlike the CCCP Indians just do not see one oppressor and many oppressed. In fact I get a little tired of all the media, Indian and international focussing on whether the defence minister is christian or the nuclear scientist is muslim. These guys are missing the forest for the trees. India is a remakable phenomenon in this world, we may not be rich but we are the epitome of multi culturalism, something which is merely an idea among academics and pols in the US.
Every Indian is a proud minority, either by religion or language or caste, education or economic status. The Tamil scientists may have built the bomb but that is probably because historically (last 50 yrs) the southern states have been better educated, Today's scientists and programmers and entrpreneurs come from every state and economic background.
I maintain my previous stance that the biggest net positive of the 'wasteful' public sector was the creation of a giant middle class. Give anyone on the planet 30 secure years on a job and chances are that their offspring will be well adjusted high self esteem individuals.

Clark, very interesting to read your post of 05/20:

<< And yes, India too will disintegrate... if only because one billion people can't be governed. In effect India has already disintegrated... into very strong and very weak state governments with less and less allegiance to the center. >>

How strong is the "national" consensus that India should remain in the present union? Who has an interest that India remains one nation? Would there be lost much if the union fell apart?

Probably simple questions, but tough to answer: Don't undertake unless you really care to and can spend the time. Maybe it will all become clear as we bumble along.

Thanks so mucho,
Thomas
