First pick on the next hot area is intrusion detection then VPNs. In Intrusion detection, I think that the best two products in the marketplace are from ISSX and NETA (Ballista by the recently acquired secure networks. There are some startups around that look like they may have potential (both private)...Take a look at fortresstech.com and mesasecure.com ... I know that Centrax was working a deal with MSFT..don't know if it consummated.

On VPNs, Aventail and Timestep both have good products though I believe they are privately owned. There is a bit of a battle over standards IPSEC vs. SOCKS; with IPSEC seemingly winning. Though if you rummage through the IETF\IPSEC forums you'll find that IPSEC has, at least what I consider, major security weaknesses that the group acknowledges and ignores. It doesn't seem to me that best of breed is applicable to the VPN market. Customers insist on a "standards" product, most often IPSEC even when they are aware of the superficiality of the security and interoperability issues. I'm guessing that the psychology behind it is..."I won't get fired if I buy a STANDARD."...disallusioning if your a security guy.

Best Regards,
Jim
