Worswick,

Very Quick Synopsis of a Major Revolution in Telecommunications

Three years ago I was heavily into the companies that were going to be the "railroad builders" of tomorrow. The datanetworkers. These companies were going to be the key players in the complete rebuilding of the 100 year old, twisted copper pair, circuit switched networks. They were the lynchpins of getting our new high speed, high capacity fibre, packet switched networks installed. This will involve hundreds of billions of dollars!

Well I thought this was going to start 3 years ago. I owned positions in 20 data networking stocks on all the leading edge of this data network. Well a little problem happened...they went into a two year slump. The biggest reason this happened was because there were just too many technologies and too many standards floating around. Telcos were lost as to what to do. They could either go with a basically telco developed ATM technology or they could use what a few very leading edge data companies were reporting, Gigabit ethernet. This debate went on for years!

Well about 1 year ago, John Chambers got up on the table and said Voice Over IP, Voice Over IP, to anyone who would listen. John Chambers was right. The new data networks are going to be using VoIP technology. I also was understanding that this is where it was all heading. I posted tons and tons of information on AOL message boards about this. Didn't get much feedback because it was a little to early.

It took time for this to shake out. During this time the Cable companies got off their butts and were suddenly in the data networking game too. As a matter of fact, I'm using one right now. The telcos don't have time to wait. So they finally decided to throw in the towel and go with ATM technology.

So now the telcos finally have a game plan. VoIP combined with ATM and they are, good to go. See Sprint's Worldwide (completely 100% overblown) coverage of their announcement of details of this new data network, they code named ION. So there is a race, and the race started without the telcos, but they are finally joining in.

There are so many companies involved in this, it's hard to pick the ones that will do well and the ones that won't. Let me give you a quick list right off the top of my head: Cisco Systems, Lucent Technologies, Newbridge Networks, Northern Telecom, Ascend Communications, Bay Networks, 3Coms, Fore Systems, Cabletron Systems, Sierra Semiconductor, Tellabs, etc.

I could spend hours filling in the details and telling you more, but just thought I would give you a brief idea. This used to be my favorite subject until Asia beat me up.
Hope this helps,
MikeM(From Florida)

PS No matter what you read about LMDS, it's years and years off(IMO)!
