>>Win '98: how many multimonitors will it support?
As many PCI slots available?

Further information on this subject. PC Magazine, June 30, 1998 page 103, says up to 9 monitors may be connected to a single computer provided your computer supports that many video cards. However, PC Magazine doesn't provide any detail. For instance they didn't mention the possibility of using multiple monitors with a video card that supports multiple monitors and where you find a computer with 9 slots for video adapters.

Win98..dual monitors...Matrox

I have not had much luck maintaining my multimonitor Win 98 system. I have the Matrox Productiva G100 in the AGP slot and the Millenium II in the PCI slot. I am using the beta Win98 Matrox drivers released yesterday. Both monitors are working but I have experienced several system crashes when using the second monitor. Perhaps I did not install the drivers properly. I have two cards but I only executed one installation file. It did not ask me any questions.

When I enabled the second monitor with the new drivers there was a message that not all applications are designed to work with multiple monitors and wanted to know if I wanted to continue.

The first time the system froze was when I was setting the resolution and color depth on the second monitor (NEC 3FGx). I played with it a bit and everything seemed ok.

I have since experienced three additional crashes/freezes. One using IE4 and two using Netscape 4.05. (I switched back to Netscape after using IE4 for a day. I could not figure out how to set up two ISP accounts in IE4)

Everything works ok until I use the second monitor. I have not been able to use the second monitor with a browser for more than ten minutes without a freeze. It seems as if the monitor looses its sync or something similar and then locks the entire system.

I do not know what the problem is but I do not consider my multimonitor setup stable. The last crash rendered my modem useless. A cold boot did not restore the modem to a working condition. Win98 recommended that I turn the modem off and then on again. I do not know how to do that. (Win 98 also told me not to EVER shut down the system without going through the shut down procedure. I also do not know how to shut down the machine properly when neither the keyboard nor the mouse respond)

The backup drives proved to be a good trouble shooting and restoration tool. I booted Win95 and verified that the modem was still working. Once verified I cloned the day old Win98 installation to the primary drive and was back up again with a working modem.
