Dale,

SMP is only valuable if you have more than one "heavy" thread or task to run. If I have an app that has one main thread that does all the work SMP is USELESS.

There are times when one fast CPU is better than 4 cpu's that are 1/3 as fast.

Most database and server software is still written for Intel/Windows NT not Alpha/NT.

Oracle has a native alpha version. MS has committed to complete the backoffice siute for native alpha. There are native versions of key middleware including Tuxedo and MTS. I think there will be reasonable server software for native Alpha.
