If you accept the premise that society is made up of individuals -
When you're talking to a lawyer, chances are you're worried about something. It's in your interest to tell your lawyer everything and trust him to sort it out. This trust absolutely requires that nobody can come and force your lawyer to spill the goodies later on.

You must be able to speak freely with your lawyer so that you might obtain the best defense possible and/or have your rights asserted as vigorously as possible. Remember in criminal proceedings we are all presumed innocent until proven guilty. In civil matters, the plaintiff must usually prevail by at least a preponderance of evidence. There is no 5th Amendment right in a civil proceeding. It benefits us all. As the Clinton investigations show however, the American system of jurisprudence always seems to protect those most who abuse it most. JLA
