Techie, Read back on the thread for the last few years. Some bitter paranoid is always warning that the sky is about to fall. That's one of several reasons no one here takes your warnings seriously. Compaq first said they were implementing BTO about 15 months ago. They failed miserably. Stuffed the channel last Christmas to keep up appearances. BTO is easier said than done. Even if Compaq were to really try to implement everything Dell has done, it would take them a couple of years, and Dell would have moved on to better systems and performance by then. Compaq will have some real problems with their announced model of: "I'll cut my prices to you, but not to you." It's ironic. You know who used to try that? Digital (aka DEC). That's how Digital tried to stop Sun Microsystems in the mid-80s. Everyone knows how well that worked. DEC used the tactic mostly as a defense of their current accounts. So will Compaq. The problem is, Compaq will kill their VARs because ALL of their accounts will want the sweet deal. Right Now! In fact, some of their accounts will call Dell to make their threat credible, get pissed if Compaq gives them any crap, and go with Dell. This move by Compaq sounds a little desperate. If you don't believe me, short Dell and buy Compaq. Some of the people on this thread have done a lot of research on these companies, their manufacturing systems, their distribution systems, their service systems, their return on investment, their inventory turns, etc. They have also seen Compaq, IBM, and HP stumble trying to slow Dell down, while they had no impact on Dell. So...what facts do you bring to the forum. So far all you have done is run around in circles like Chicken Little shouting, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"
