Gersh, I hope the biz was good while you were in it! What do you think of the prices mentioned in that article?
2/3 of PC's in Q4 sub-0's? I think that's high, but it does indicate how severe the price movement has become.
And now we have Dell entering the $1000 arena. And Compaq has stated they are going to take on Dell in their Corporate account base. To me that means steeper pricing curves on the high end of the PC biz. A price war?
And with the makers losing some of their fear of Wintel due to the DOJ and FTC, I'm beginning to wonder about the size of the 2H recovery for Intel.
Scary.

I figure that only the very biggest boxmakers just might survive. Me?? I got out of the way of the train.

I think there will always be room for the local retailer. Buying from a big boxmaker over the internet still leaves open the question of service - you have to ship the machine, out of pocket, back to Dell (or whoever) if something goes wrong.

>> that's why I closed my PC business a few months ago. <<

Good move, here in Los Angeles, a number of mom & pop storefronts threw in their towels when CPQ started getting rid of bottom line Presarios at various channels with heavy discounts. Gateway and Dell didn't help their bottom line either with discounts effected in the past couple of months.

Margins are poor and I look for more box makers go out of business until the day when Computer Shopper magazine is no longer a tome but a pamphlet.
