17 Stocks that 'buck the trend'. Every one of the 17 stocks have been and will appear in my watch lists. Most of them have appeared and will continue to appear as 'earnings plays'.. With all this talk about earnings shortfalls, how much air time is given to stocks that have beat estimates in the past and have had their earnings revised upwards? How many in the list below are in the technology sector? NOT ONE....

Now every analyst is important enough to impact the trend of a stock, every upgrade will add 5% or more to a stock in just 1-2 days. Say one of them is Bear Stearns, Hambrecht & Quist, Merrill Lynch. Now imagine 2 of them or even 3. Now look at the technical charts of these companies: GPS, TRV,LOW,CCL,LTD, etc. They are the ones that bucked the trend in the last 6 weeks and will continue to advance. Every week more stocks are added to this list. When the list below becomes OVERBOUGHT, there will be new ones added each week. After these stocks retreat they will be buys again and again as they continue breaking through resistance.

Jenna, Re: satellite communications, Barron's is an institutional publication ... institutions do not set the trend, but once the trend is established and clear, they provide the POWER and LONGEVITY for the trend.

How do you recognize when to exit a loser when its behavior
is more akin to a slow death rather than a sudden drop due to news or a sudden change
in fundamentals? Do you go simply by the numbers? -10% and exit, -20%?

Daniel,

Don't sell PAIR now! I just started buying. Remember ASND last fall...I know you do. Sometimes I enter too early but only after it's off it 52 wk high by a certain percentage usually +50%. For me that is the easiest way to limit downside. The biggest danger is; has the company been broken or is WS over re-acting? In the case of Ascend WS went overboard. We all knew about the products and future so to me it was a no brainer. I feel Pairgain may be in a similar position. I am having a rougher time with SMOD but know I'm right long term. We all get a little jumpy when the surrounding market climate is uncertain, it makes it tougher to stick to your convictions.

One other key variable I like to consider is: Will the company perform as I expect in the next 12 mos. Or will it take 2-3 years for product to ramp or company to turn around. It is my opinion the market has changed it's LT strategies toward investing now that fund managers have to show results in the very short term. You have to learn to take advantage of institutions that day trade.

Keep a clear head and dump the real dogs....and know the market climate. Yes, it's easier said then done.<g>

Jeff

IMNT - entry at 14

SYQT - still long

PAIR and exiting - the best determinant is always going to be a simple trendline. With all the FA/TA/NN stuff I do, I've never found anything better than trendling for pure, simple confirmation.
