WorldCom-MCI Expect European Approval by Friday

By Mark McQuillan at Bloomberg News

17-JUN-98

WorldCom Inc. Chief Executive Bernard Ebbers and MCI Communications Corp. Chairman Bert Roberts said they expect WorldCom's acquisition of MCI to win European Commission approval as early as Friday, the Washington Post said.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Ebbers said they haven't yet identified an "acceptable" single buyer for MCI's residential and business Internet customer accounts, which will be sold along with wholesale Internet facilities MCI earlier agreed to sell to Cable & Wireless Plc, the UK's No. 2 telephone company.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Potential buyers include AT&T Corp., Psinet Inc., IXC Communications Inc. and Sprint Corp., the Post said.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿ Last week Cable & Wireless failed to win a court order in Washington seeking to prevent MCI from talking to other potential bidders for MCI's Internet units.
