In case anyone really cares, I mis-typed in my earlier post re the ZIP fix for NT.

The actual program file is called zip-fixi.exe.

Wingate is a great solution for small offices. the webramp is a more reliable solution but lacking some features. cost wise wingate wins hands down. As long as your mac software runs on TCPIP and supports proxy and/or socks v4/5 you will be happy with either solution...
personally I would use wingate or winproxy with two clients for home use. Why? cost. for more users and business use I think the router is a better solution because of increased robustness. I have personally implimented both for my clients BTW.

>> As I understand it WinProxy or Wingate is only required to run on one of the two PCs, the Win 98 PC in your case. If this is true then it shouldn't matter if one of the PCs as a Mac. If not please correct my misunderstanding.

Here is the answer to the Mac compatibility question.

From WinGate's web site at deerfield.com

Q: Can I connect a MAC through WinGate on my network?

A: WinGate will support connections from almost any TCP/IP stack, though it was developed on, and for Microsoft's TCP/IP stack built in to Win95 and NT. It is possible to connect through WinGate on a network using UNIX, Linux, and MAC's. For information on connecting MAC's through WinGate, go to mag-nify.educ.monash.edu.au and read through the article. You can also get a lot of good information on using MAC's on a WinGate network from the WinGate open users forum at the WinGate home page at wingate.net

From WinProxy's web site at winproxy.com

WinProxy only requires installation on a single PC. While this PC must be connected to a Local Area Network, is not required to be dedicated solely to running WinProxy.

I'm still absorbing networking info in aux site but I was able to ascertain that current Diamond SHotgun systems (SupraSonic II) utilize Webramp technology via a licensing agreement.

rampnet.com

I haven't yet done the cost comparison between going with Diamond Shotgun + a proxy server vs the Webramp system which is basically Shotgun + a router. Looks like I won't be able to get to it til next week. But for a person like me who needs to purchase modem(s) as well as networking hard or software the Webramp idea looks more appealing due to less configuration grief and having the entire network connection ( duel modems + router) system in one box.
