Interesting theory Scott.

So messing up one's mind and body is hurting society we should regulate drug use? Alcohol causes even more damage to mind and body, should we outlaw alcohol? Obesity is a huge problem in this country. Close to 50% of the population is overweight. This causes tremendous costs on society. Health costs are higher. Productivity is reduced. Obesity is hurting society more than drugs or alcoholism. Should we outlaw butter?

Almost all the societal problems you attribute to drug use are largely the result of the criminalization of drugs. Before drugs were criminalized none of those problems were as large as they are now.

Perhaps you can enlighten us all on a definite explanation of "the common good". It is a term I hear frequently, but nobody has fully defined for me...
If the common good is the eradication of Jews (and in Nazi Germany, this was considered the case), then should we consider that valid?
If the common good is subsidizing wealthy corporations (and in the US, we obviously believe that to be the case), then is that valid?
I don't know...the common good is such a beneficial thing, but I have yet to really be provided anything good by those who follow it.

But someone who is self destructive will just use another poison. And there is nothing more destructive than alcohol and look how that worked when we tried to ban it. And better that they not drain their financial resources and rent by paying inflated prices for drugs that are caused by the drug war.

Scott

Ayn Rand says the common good is a fiction used by government to justify power grabs. Before you start flogging the common good argument, you should consider the effect on the individual liberty of the 99% of the population that does not abuse drugs or alcohol.
