Users Should Skip NT 5.0,
Analysts Say
(06/29/98; 1:57 p.m. ET)
By David Wilby, Network Week

Analysts at this month's GigaWorld IT Forum '98 in
Arizona recommended users skip Microsoft's
long-awaited Windows NT 5.0 release and wait for a
later version.

The operating system is several times larger than
previous versions of NT, and would not be
recommended by Giga Information Group until it has
been tested by its first customers, said Rob Enderle,
director of desktop and mobile technology at Giga, in
Boston.

"We just don't feel we can recommend the product until
we wait for the first set of companies to drive out any
bugs," said Enderle.

The core part of NT 5.0, its kernel, is reported to be
around 80 percent newly written, said Enderle. "In our
experience, when a brand new product hits -- and there
is no testing or servicing of major components -- the
market doesn't accept it very quickly," he said.

Morgan Stanley downgrade of MSFT

Well it was more like still an outperform but with a target price of 107. In any case the news all over everywhere today is that at a conference on NT5.0 deployment MSFT will announce a Beta 3 and a delay into mid 99.

Here is the point however. This gives Novell an extra quarter to get its Netware 5.0 established in the enterprise. You would think the stock would pop.

IT"S UP AN EIGHTH!!!!!!!

Now most people here except me believed MSFT would give NOVL breathing room because they expected a late release of NT5, but the stock hasn't responded to what should be a Buy signal!!!!

I didn't see merryl on that list. Just due to the size of their army, when they upgraded and then reiterated their recommendation, is the same time volume spiked and the stock hit 13 1/2. I hate merryl but was loving them then.

Hi Elmo - Saw this in a SUNW article..."...sources close to Novell said the Provo, Utah, networking company is considering purchasing WebLogic. Scott Dietzen, vice president of marketing at the San Francisco server maker, declined to comment on any potential acquisitions..."

Have you heard anything regarding Novell's interest in WebLogic? I sure hope they do not pay too much if they eventually purchase.
