>> returned the 8Plex as it seemed to have a problem ...

I see Plextor IS still making 'em like they useta <ggg>.

Possibly multi-session CDs cause this? A guess which
doesn't seem too likely for commercial CDs, but perhaps
it's jumping around reading the various indexes.

I couldn't comment without hearing the drive. Many high speed drives are extremely noisy. mitsumi 12x is the loadest I have ever heard. My plextor 12x is not that quiet. You have to realize CD's were never specced to spin as fast as they do today nor to tolerate the unbalanced nature you get when you paint labels on the CD's. All these things contribute to the vibrational noise. Beyond that I don't know what to tell you. I am far more concerned with function and performance then noise. NTI CD Maker will not to DAO audi recordings. Highly not recommended for audio. Check on the following URL for lots of info on your Ricoh. Make sure to flash the firmware to latest level.

Dear thread, do you know what a >>back plate<< is? No? You have to!

ok...i got my new atx case today wondering about a small flexible metal plate with some holes in it..for connectors..... right, the back plate! i know now as well that it doesnt fit to my Asus P2b mobo. A short check on the net and i learned that most mobos need a 'single line' back plate..but not the Asus P2b.
You dont know what i'm talking about?
Here is a collection of 4 different back plates:

ok..i got the wrong one..no big deal..

did we discuss this already? oh, missed it, sorry...

perPlexin...Zeus Machine..8Plex..Its the caddy!

I tried a different computer and a different SCSI card ( AHA 2920) and I still had the same problem. It had to be another bad drive. I took the drive, caddy and a dozen bad CD's back to the dealer. He tried it with the bad CD's and it worked. I am thinking this guy must think I am nuts. I had the caddy and asked him to try the same CD's in the caddy...Voila.

I have two caddies as both of my new drives came with caddies. I had tried both of them. It turns out that I had two defective caddies!!

Iwill responded to my email in about a day and a half. Not bad.
