I own two cellular phones. One is a Radio Shack rebranded Nokia that is hardwired in its third car. Works fine on Bell Atlantic Mobile's AMPS network. I also have an Ericsson AH-310 handheld (sorry, but I bought it before investing in QCOM and before Sprint and Bell Atlantic had functional CDMA local systems as they do now). Obviously, standby time is not a factor for the car phone. But, as a practical matter, neither is it a factor for the handheld. You could double or quintuple the standby time and I would not care, since the phone is almost always turned off when not being used for an outgoing phone call. Nobody, other than my wife and I, our daughter's school principal, and the company that monitors my home's alarm system, have this phone number. If I were paying the lower per minute prices now available from Sprint, this might be different.

Voice quality

From PCWEEK Online zdnet.com

"I've used two digital phones and services--Cellular One and Sprint
PCS--and have explored Omnipoint. In my experience, they all have
both strengths and weaknesses. Cellular One, with a huge analog
network to back up budding digital networks, has better coverage,
which translates to fewer dropped calls. Sprint PCS boasts slightly
better voice quality, although when I hear someone as clearly as if they were standing in my ear, the sound quality is often poorer on the other end of the line. As often as not, they say, "You're cutting in and out, John."

comments anyone?

What consumers want in a 'phone (?)

>> Stand-by time is matters most to GSM users,

I disagree.

'Focus' group exercises I have participated in (results from Europe, USA and Japan) suggest that minimum size and weight is what matters most to consumers. Next on the list is battery life (i.e. maximum talk and standby times)

Bells and whistles serve as product differentiators.

Cost isn't really an issue for the customers, as a significant portion of the 'phone cost is borne by the network provider.

The actual air interface technology (GSM/CDMA/DECT/PHS/AMPS) doesn't matter. The 'phone user just wants to know if the 'phone is digital or analog. Digital is perceived to be superior.

Why do people on this thread keep responding to this noise that tero keeps spitting out. The major GSM handset makers have stated that CDMA
will be the next standard through ETSI. There is no dispute therfore what is the superior system. Why would erickson and Nokia go with w-CDMA if GSM was so great. So Tero give it a rest. The only dispute now is to what degree IPR's of Qcom will be used. It is obvious that Erickson did not invent CDMA since they publicly claimed it did not work. In any event CDMA is the Future and Qcom is CDMA. As for marketing of nokia, I agree that they are quite good, as is General Motors. Taking old cars and dressing them up only works for so long. Eventually people would rather have the better, more reliable, more effient then the aqua Blue cavalier. As for the quality debate, I still say that in analog and GSM Mot still has the best horse in town.
Considering that GSM is a European standard it seems sad that Motorolla as pathetic a company as it has become still makes phones ion's better then any European manufacturer. Furthermore I ve owned a Nokia and an erickson they were both chevys compared to Mot elite. I returned the Nokia after 1 day and layed out the 700 for my Mot.
