Was that on Dateline or something? When I was in Belize City the taxi dude I hired to show me the "sights" was very mad about the show. I had seen it about 2 weeks before I went.

With his reaction I just looked around and saw TONS of SUV's and just agreed with him that it was BS (the show) and smiled to myself inside...

marcos,

We have stayed twice now in Cancun, Mexico (the lesser expensive Hawaii of North America, in my opinion). Both times we toured the Mayan ruins in the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan.

I didn't mean to imply in my earlier post that the Mexicans were in any way at fault or involved with the car thefts, other than the Mexican government does appear to look the other way on the issue, sort of a live and let live attitude. We saw many sports utility vehicles while down there, and the tour guides openly acknowledged that the vast majority were stolen in Texas and being driven to Belize. As you said, the Mexican government cares little about the practice.

Belice¤os have a reputation for being lazy and untrustworthy, among mejicanos.

No se ofenda camarada, ni se encabreste, pero es como que el comal le dijo a la olla,

Oye Olla, oye, oye.

Y habiendo dicho eso, en todos lares se cu‚cen habas.

Arriba, abajo, al centro, y pa'dentro.... Sal£.

Es usted Yucateco ? j ....? or should I say... eh ?

El gobierno mejicano doesn't care if you bring a car into M‚xico, as long as you take it out.

Why should they........

A few years ago, (I have forgotten the exact year), General¡simo Arturo Durazo, Big Supremo in Chief of all the Mexican Polic¡as, was arrested in Los Angeles, (USA), under charges that he was the master mind of a huge Car-thieve ring that stole US cars, and "legally" imported them into Mexico, selling them to "gran influyentes en el gobierno". ('grand influential individuals in the government' -- a very prestigious title amongst Mexicanos).

This was in a time in which ANY car not manufactured in the US, needed an "import permit" to be brought in..... in those days, an "import permit" meant: You can not import anything into the country, unless:

1. you have an important contact (influence), in the "RIP" (that's the folklore name for the PRI or "the Partido Revolucionario Institucional, in other words the Mexican monarchy.... er.. government).

2. You are willing to pay a "mordida" (bite), as in bribe, to those that will "procure" you such permit. (in their words, reserved only for gods and members of the RIP)

Our Hero, General¡simo Durazo, once hired an Architect (whom I know), to build him some Tennis courts in his country estate, just outside Mexico City.....

Because General Durazo wanted to "look out his window and see who was playing".... he had them blast out an entire mountain side so he could accomplish his wish.

Once this architect related to me the "grand style" in which this General lived, (and the luxurious insides of his country estate, including several bronze statuates, and the like). His comment was something to the effect that: "Not even The Queen of England today, lives in the grand style that this, and other "empowered despots" live. Oh, and by the way, most probably all this was paid by the Mexican taxpayer (unkowingly, to the majority, of course). The General, (as far as I last knew), is rotting away in an LA "Justice Palace"..... this time at the expense of the US taxpayer...... Once a thief.... always a thief..... oops, I meant to say politician... oh well, same thing, no matter what flag they are under......

In fairness, I understand that today, the government is slowly (emphasize, "slowly"), getting rid of corruption...... but trying is no "succedding", at least many of the import restrictions have been lifted.... almost, the paper work is tremendous.... and the fees... (including many "mordidas"), are still there.

Anyway.... just a small note on Democracy in Latin America.....

As for ruins and other pretty places in Chiapas, and in general the Maya regions.....

I am sure you have visited: San Crist¢bal de las Casas, (where another Marcos made history on January 1st, 1995.)

Something amazing about San Crist¢bal is the change in wether from tropical jungle, to almost Alpine (in temperature, and some flora, such as pine trees), that you can see as you drive up to the town.

Also, las Cascadas de "Agua Azul" (Agua Azul water falls), are pretty.

Tikal (in Guatemala).... an impressive Maya site, and Cop n (in Honduras). another Maya site.

I believe that the entire area has hardly been explored, as the Jungle is so thick and resources scarce, I believe that there may be many other temples that essentially the Jungle has "eaten them away".

Hasta luego.....
