geez - ok so you think Java isnt the bees knees - your on record. Sun is stamping out servers at record numbers - there untouchable. What more do you want them to do - give Sun a chance to execute their strategy - Javastations are all incremental revenue for Sun and they are moving in the market. They are not simply going to sit and defend a high end while wintel encroaches - they are going to change the game. They dont want to be cray computer or sgi. What about the remarketing deals with SABRE - the upside is huge and something Sun would have conceded to the pc makers in the past. Java, p-java, embedded java licensing is huge also - sony, motorola, alcatel, TCI the recent issue of business week mentions GM as well. should they wait until Microsoft establishes the standards and then try to compete with them on their own turf? Java is the most brilliant computer language/platform/paradigm/marketing move of the late twentieth century - it opens doors for Sun that were previously closed and gives inroads to customers for software, consulting, support and yes servers. Java is the most taught programming course in college - dont you think this has an effect on Sun's ability to hire graduates and get name recognition? If you dont want Sun to succeed then you will wish they didnt invent Java - otherwise thank your lucky stars and go along for the ride.

making great severs isnt enough in this business - SGI has great servers and workstations - superior to Sun in some respects and a joke to compare them with wintel.

The only noise I want to hear from Sun is the noise of them stamping-out servers. Servers that Microsoft and the PC makers can't deliver.

The Java noise is entirely unnecessary, and is doing more harm than good.

Without Java, Sun's core competency of servers would be in jeopardy. Why? Because MSFT would be using ActiveX and other proprietary technologies to lock in NT that much sooner. Whether it ever directly earns SUNW a penny in profit, Java has leveraged a tremendously increased number of server sales and kept a level playing field (for IBM, DEC, and HWP as well, but since SUNW is leading in server sales it benefits them most). I can also state authoritatively that Java has opened lots of CEO's doors to SUNW salespeople which would not be open otherwise. All of the other stuff that comes with Java (name value, possible profits, JINI, embedded stuff) will be gravy.

Completely agree, and the reason why SUN not trading in the mid '60's
instaed of in the tank at 48.

With the growth rate they have, and the PROFITS, they are prime and they cannot get rewarded because of the following:

1- McNealy's big mouth in antagomizing MSFT [Analysts NOTICE these things]

2- as if JAVA means ANYTHING to SUNW [Analysts, who don't know any ebtter, think JAVA is actually important to SUN.. Yeah Right.]

3- Misunderstand that SUN is not a SUPERB Box vendor, with an Excellent scalable OS, running applications at fabulous speeds.

If the disregarded the NC / Java & Jini bull@hit, they would be trading in the low 60's right now. Imagibne that. A profitabel, growing High-tech company with ASIA as a drag on all other comapnies has not even fazed SUNW!!!

Wow

Anyway
Good points
Jean

Remember people : is is not a religious war between SUN and MSFT. It is about MONEY, and PROFITS, and growing in youw own niche

Who cares if Java, Jini or NC's go nowhere. The money is in Servers
and storage arrays, maybe consulting too.
