Forget companies (well not literally). SAP is just entering the public sector - with great success! Do you realize how may municipalities/educational institutions there are? They are just learning the benifits of ERP software.

>so what do they do for an encore?

This is a natural progression for any product based on technology that is expensive to develop. You start at the top of the market where the benefits of your product justify its expense. You saturate that market. You drop your price so that the next tier can have a good ROI in your product. etc. etc. (Remember when the car phone cost $3,000.)

>>The only real question I have about SAP as a long term investment is that most of the large enterprises will have SAP before long, so what do they do for an encore?<<

SAP's software runs the core business systems of our world's largest corporations. Because of this market power, they are in an amazing position to both innovate and control entire market segments. Take for example business to business systems (extranets). If they control the inner workings of enough systems, they hold the key to allow these systems to talk to one another over the Internet. This would drive more people towards their products and force their competitors to adhere to THEIR innovations. Bottom line, their sheer market power will provide them with ample opportunities to diversify.
