I will take shot, Carriers need to build WAN, which is reliable and be able to provide Quality-of- service, Service level agreements, sophisticated network management and billing systems so they can make money off of these networks. LAN is important but it can be build at the level of the end users which can be the companies. I think LAN would ultimately become a commodity.

1. A WAN is a Wide Area Network.

2. A LAN is a Local Area Network.

3. Carriers primarily build WANs. Normally end users build their local LANs, tho this is frequently outsourced.

4. Yes, LAN construction frequently requires lots of hubs and switches.

"First respondent with the right answers on a postcard will make lots of money out of carefully selected networking stocks."
No, No, No, Mrclinton, If you want to evaluate and compare Cisco and Lucent you have to ask yourself four questions.
1. What is Cisco's core business?
2. What is Lucent's core business?
3. Why is it so much easier for Cisco to compete against Lucent's core business than for Lucent to compete against Cisco's core business?
4. Do I feel lucky? (Naah, you can forget this question.}

Let me rephrase these questions to be more relevant..
>Before I start then a couple of questions.
>1. What is a WAN?
What is a voice network?

>2. What is a LAN?
What is a data network?

>3. Which one of the above do carriers build?
Which one did old-world carriers build?
Which one are new-world carriers building?

>4. Do they use LOTS of hubs and LAN switches to do this?
Do they use LOTS of voice switches to do this?
Do they use LOTS of IP routers and switches to do this?
Does data networking expertise in the LAN translate to increased competitiveness in a packet-switched WAN?

Does a Cisco router/switch in the LAN hooked to a Cisco router/switch in the WAN provide better end-to-end throughput and more service enhancing features than a hodge-podge of equipment each with their own idiosyncracies?
