research and development costs were 2% higher than average, product costs 2% higher than average, both of which are an anomally given the times and which would have given them another $.16 in earnings had both continued close to average. can't dismiss that sales for the nine months ended July 26, 98 are still 25% ahead of the same time frame in 1997; their systems for copper interconnect deposition are ahead of schedule; the system, if successful, which puts them ahead of the competition in nearly all areas. there are some significant positives here going forward.

I hear that CNBC reports AMAT trading at 31.25 in the aftermarket.

One other concern in the report is the lowered tax rate in the most recent period. Since that apparently increased EPS by $0.02, it means AMAT didn't exceed estimates by much on a comparable earnings basis.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the conference call, but it doesn't sound like Morgan painted a glowingly positive picture.
