Franz -
1) Canion and team will not be coming back to CPQ. All of the guys on that list are very early CPQ, part of Rod's original team. Cabello was head of CPQ Legal but lost out to the DEC guy in the merger - he just left CPQ a few months ago. Tim Harris also left recently. Those gentlemen are all extremely well fixed, and I think their plans run more to hunting and golf than getting back in the game.

2) Dan is a top designer who has made many important contributions over the years. But CPQ's silicon team is strong and they will be fine post-Dan. I would expect Dan to turn up in a lead role in some silicon business pretty quickly.

3) I don't think CPQ sees Apple as a serious competitor in their space. I think they will be spending ad dollars on the enterprise story and supporting their mainline business.

4) I don't know what the long term plans are for Alta Vista, but I understand that they believe it will have substantially more value within CPQ than it would as a spinoff. I would expect them to leverage that asset in their core business.

>>4) I went into a office supply store and noticed that CPQ is putting a internet key on keyboards that launches the web and goes to AltaVista. Good move. Now what are we going to do with AltaVista?

There are four internet keys on all new Compaq Presarios. The main one leads to a special Yahoo/Compaq page. The second is the AltaVista page. The third is a special secure Compaq shopping page with links to Amazon, Flowers, etc... And the fourth button is the e-mail.

In terms of AltaVista: Compaq needs to make some serious updates fast. I read message boards and chat rooms will be coming soon. Also, some personalization would be good (i.e. "push" technology). Alta Vista has added new stuff the past month or so. The Career section is relatively new. So are the Finance, Map, ABCNEWS, CARDS, and DISCOVERY sections. I'm still waiting for a weather, sports, and lotto section. Nevertheless, I'm sure Compaq knows it need to upgrade. Buying the www.altavista.com address shows that Compaq is serious about AV.

Franz,
" I went into a office supply store and noticed that CPQ is putting a internet key on keyboards that launches the web and goes to AltaVista. Good move. Now what are we going to do with AltaVista? It seems like the same tired old AltaVista we have always known. Is there any plan to do something big? Why not make a Amazon/Yhoo/LCOS combination store that works in multiple languages. In other words, leverage our language translator to become a portal that offers what all the others offer but also with a translation of foreign sites."

If the translator is that good, this is an excellent idea. Many translators give rough translations that are OK for a few documents but not for a constant source of information. How good are the translations?

Franz,
I think reviews like this will take care of any serious Apple problem.
