Paul E. re: <They will be of zero value in converting the non-PC households to PC households.>
Think you should read the 10 page ad Apple is running on iMac.
It's targeted directly at non-pc households wanting to get on the net.
Classy ad, and the early reviews are they are accomplishing this goal.

Paul:

Re: They (Apple) will be of zero value in converting the non-PC households to PC households. Most of these homes are non-technical/non-professional and a "Yuppie iMAC" ain't gonna cut it with those folks.

Many colleagues and friends my age (30's) have PCs at home. A few of these yuppie-types may buy an iMAC because it's new. The people that don't have computers include: my mother, my aunt, my grandmother, another aunt, and many other retired people we know. Are they going to buy a neon-colored see-through plastic computer and put it in the middle of their traditional homes with their china cabinets and antiques? I doubt it.

Adam

Paul Engel. Re: "Apple does missionary work, all right, but they target the "elitest" class." I agree that Apple's approach is sophomoric.

Nevertheless, I'm not so sure the "target" or the advertising will be the determining factor. I believe it will be a combination of "perceived need" matched with "simple/economic" solutions.

If Apple can provide them, they, along with others will get people to become computer owners. I still don't think computers are easy enough to use for the average person, and that will hinder penetration.
