<< if the president resigned, the Stock Market would absolutely tank.>>

And we could thank Clinton and his indiscretions for it if it did happen. I personally think that any market reaction to Clinton resigning would border on the absurd. Clinton did not propel the Dow to 9000 and by his resignation alone I would see no real effect. Frankly, I think the markets should rally if he resigned. After all, it would be the first step in the US regaining not only some sense of self-respect but the respect of the world as well. We would be telling the world that we do not tolerate liars to occupy the Presidency.

<<Clinton will never, ever resign. It's not in him.>>

I agree here. But should Gephardt, Moynihan and a few other seasoned democrats face him down he will go. It will be called a resignation but it would be more accurately described as a 'mutual agreement'. I think the democratic party stands to be decimated for years to come over Clinton's lies and adolescent behavior and these guys will not hesitate to oust the president to preserve their own political viability.

>> First, if the president resigned, the Stock Market would absolutely tank. Second, Clinton will never, ever resign. It's not in him. Clinton, like all politicians, is a narcissistic, needy man. He believes, rightly or wrongly, that he has been targeted and victimized. He will never back down.

The market has that largely factored it in. The market may even rally since it is clear that Clinton is an international joke and feckless as a leader. Virtually all the rise in the market during his tenure occurred after the Dems lost power and Slick lost control of policy in 1994. To paraphrase what James Cramer said in January, "he's a second-rater, no one cares so long as Greenspan is there".

Clinton will resign when the Dems in Congress make it clear they won't support him. That can happen any time but surely will happen after November.

Clinton has deffinitely been targeted. The problem is he made it so easy by putting a big bulls eye on his ass.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, screw Ken Starr and his cronies Newt and Trent "I've got the trots" Lott.

First, if the president resigned, the Stock Market would absolutely tank.

Probably, but it would recover within a couple of hours and stage a big rally. On the other hand, drawn out impeachment proceedings would likely result in a full-blown bear market.

Second, Clinton will never, ever resign.

No resignation, no pardon. Starr may or may not indict a sitting president, but the OIC will surely indict Clinton as soon as he leaves office...

I think the question is not whether Clinton will resign from office but when.

Hog wash. It would be an enormous relief. If you knew how sour people feel about this president ... barbers ... waiters ... golf buddies ... bank tellers ... law partner I had lunch with yesterday ... mason fixing my patio ... kids teacher ... you would realize that Clinton and his crummy team disgust a lot of people. Getting rid of him might get people out into the streets celebrating. More than a few people would either stop selling stock or start buying into the future of America.

Above all, if Congress showed the guts to impeach this man, it would be a strong sign that we might start moving towards the kind of politics that would bring voters, who now think all politicians are liars and crooks so why bother, back to the polls and back in to the system.

It would be wonderful to be able to feel proud of our country again, and we would deserve to feel very proud if we managed to root out the likes of Clinton peacefully and democratically.
