It was better than that. Moynihan also said quite clearly that Clinton's effort to deceive the American public for seven months (until cornered by the truth and the process) was also an impeachable offense. JLA

Conjured up scandal? I thought he admitted he lied to the American people and used the power of his office and his own cabinet officials, wife, etc. to foist a cover up on the American public. Its obvious that he also lied in the PJ case and probably to the grand jury as well. What's worse until several significant defections from his own supporters, he could not even bring himself to say three simple words: "I am sorry". No. Not a conjured scandal at all unless Clinton is the conjurer. JLA

Michelle, re this conjured up scandal.

Here are the facts:

1) Bill Clinton said during the Nixon/Watergate scandal, according to several sources, "If a President ever lied to the American people, he should resign".

He also said, and was quoted in print in the Arkansas Gazette, "If a President ever lied to a duly authorized Federal official, he should be impeached".

2) Nobody asked Clinton to lie to the American people. He did so willingly, evidently because: a) he was ashamed of something, b) he wanted to cover up an illegal activity c) it was politically expedient for him personally to lie.

3) Nobody conjured up anything. Clinton willfully lied to the American people for personal gain, deceived his top cabinet officials, and then used the full power and more of the Executive branch of government in a seven-month effort to obstruct justice.

The president cannot get away with perjury in a civil sexual harassment trial. It's simply not there, it's not an excuse.

For all the efforts you and other supporters are going to in repeating "it's only about sex", I ask you: If extramarital affairs with subordinate 19 year-old employees is no big deal etc., then why did bubba lie about it?

The answer, as you well know, is: It's not okay to have illicit sex at the office with a subordinate employee who is half your age, when you are the most powerful man in the world.

He sought the office, and he knew it required a high level of personal conduct from the get-go: He said after he was elected that he would "run the most ethical administration in history".

According to Lieberman, what Clinton did is "not just inappropriate, it is immoral. He also added that Clinton's behavior undermined the efforts that American parents put into instilling strong family values into their children.

Today, another Congressman said, "we all realize that the breakdown of the family unit is the single biggest problem that our society faces, and is the cause of much of our societal problems" (or words similar, found in the "Democrats Distance Themselves from Clinton" article I referenced previous).

It's time for you to wake up and smell the coffee that the majority of Americans are drinking.

Michelle,

I see them pushing to get Starr's report by the 9/15 and then if they decide to start an impeachment process it will take about 6 weeks to get this matter behind us. I do not know what is in Starr's report but I hope he spared us the hearsay and descriptions of sex.

I do fault Clinton for taking the risk that he did with this Lewinsky matter when he knew that he had enemies investigating him. It shows a serious lapse of good judgment. It also means his marriage is not very good.

However, I laud his efforts in Ireland and Bosnia. His efforts against the Tobacco industry is an important initiative. I am not crazy about his insurance policy but I do think we need to make available medical treatment to the whole population.

I think he assembled an admirable financial team in Rubin and Greenspan. I am not very happy with his Secretary of state or the attorney general. I think Reno should have resigned after the Branch Davidian fiasco.( The mishandling of that led directly to the Oklahoma bomb disaster.) Iraq is a real problem since the coalition has fallen apart. I think the job of the president has become increasingly difficult.

He is a very capable president who seems to be lacking real support in his home life and that makes him more susceptible to women like Monica. His anger over the intrusions into his personal life are understandable. He has been persecuted without mercy during both his terms in office.

I agree with Senator Monihan that we should get this matter behind us ASAP regardless of the outcome.
