Tero: Since when have your views of "loonies" - right wing or otherwise - mattered? Who cares what you think of US politicians? Yes, the US position re Cuba is illogical to many and the idea of the US attempting to enforce the way non US countries trade with Cuba does infringe on the sovereignty of Finland probably. So? What does that have to do with Al Gore's support for the Q in Russia in time of need? Why has the Q been one of the two companies named in all the press reports as a key participant in the US Gov't Commerce Dept tour of Southeast Asia about to take place to advance US business interests? Do these reflect the influence of "loonies" from the South? And I guess a Finn can be forgiven for thinking Texas is where the opposum holds forth. LOL. Texas is Texas - proud mixture of west, south and even a bit of north here and there. Also do you have any idea what the number of ex northerners is in Atlanta? Suggest you leave your polemics re US politics out of your selective attacks on the Q at the apparent behest of Ericy. But wait, maybe you are making these statements as a plant for Nokia to poison the well politically within the US Congress re Ericy and help Nokia win by angering a chunk of the US political spectrum? What do you think you are accomplishing? Trying to start a political argument here on this board? When it comes to the Q, the political support is wide and deep in the US. An example of the Q's care and smarts. Just another area where the Q's management has shown brilliant savy and footwork. All IMO and assume you will continue your selected attacks - sadly. Chaz

Tero, your response changes nothing and certainly doesn't do a thing to assuage the opinion that your prejudice is showing. Now, you identify Republicans and so-called right-wingers as the enemy. While we can disagree, there is no excuse for attacking people personally. In your view, it's okay for Ericy to use political clout but not for Qualcomm; it's you who got on the high horse. We all see through your prejudice.

Tero,

And I thought that the small Japanese competitors of NTT-Docomo chose CDMA only because they knew that GSM would be compatible with W-CDMA and they did not want a system that would be upgraded into Docomo-backed standard. I seem to have read wrong newspapers

You read newspapers wrong, rewrote the history, and twisted the facts again. Those small Japanese operators chose CDMA deployments before NTT Docomo's WCDMA plan. NTT Docomo's WCDMA plan reflected its worry of losing market shares to those "small" Japanese operators. NTT Docomo adopted the plan to counter those "small" operators' choice of CDMA.

PS. Those small Japan operators (one owned by TOYOTA) may have more combined revenue than your beloved NOKA. I wonder which "small" definition you are referring to? I would keep my Sony camcoders, Sony TVs, Sony monitors, Sony phones, Sony stereos, Toyota vans, and Toyota sedans any day than you beloved NOKA's products.

Where was NOKA when QCOM invented IS-95? Where was NOKA when QCOM's had the vision to buy internet email- Eudora program? Where was NOKA when QCOM decided to license its CDMA to now about 60 telecom small companies. Where was NOKA when QCOM had this aggressive Globalstar plan back? Where was NOKA when QCOM's Omnitrac system can not find almost non competitor in its field?

Brian H.

Tero: Thank you for clearing up that you think that only certain Americans are Xenophobes, I think that there is that loser section in every country.

As for who has chosen CDMA and who hasn't I think you better do some research. Besides the Crooked Chinese deals who has won in the choosing of greenfield applications (i.e. starting from scratch)? I think that you will find that in areas where GSM and CDMA have competed head to head for new systems (not merely expansions) that CDMA has won hands down. Forget Japan, China, Korea, and Europe those are special cases where the government for whatever reasons has said that all systems must be of a certain type (CDMA or GSM), or the decisions were corrupt. In markets where the choices have been open the companies have clearly chosen CDMA more often (dare I cay much more often) than GSM. Take South and Central America. Many many countries are beginning the buildout of new digital cell phone systems the last I heard their choices were relatively uncorrupted by money or politics and more have chosen CDMA than have chosen TDMA or GSM. Take Australia, last we heard from Mr. Winn they for the most part have chosen CDMA. Even Hutchison who had both CDMA and GSM systems chose CDMA (I think).

Basically the message is this: When the playing field is level and bereft of overbearing government influence or monetary bribery CDMA is chosen much more often than GSM and TDMA for greenfield applications.

BTW: two things, I tend to agree about SOME of the politicians in the US congress. They can appear to be fairly closed minded and old fashioned (like the KKK). But it is really bad to judge people based on the vocal minority. I am glad that you didn't. Second the reason that GSM wasn't chosen for Japan, the last I heard, was that ARIB only let IS-95 in and not GSM.
