Are these all "ultra-right-wing religious fanatics"?

Hi Investor2; Perjury isn't really a crime if you are just trying
to protect the name of a frail intern. Any real man would
say what he had to, protect the good name of a lady. Even
"trailer park trash" deserves the respect of a gentleman.
It would have been a little better if he hadn't referred to the
love of his life as "that woman" when he gainsaid her on
national TV. It also would have been a little less harsh if
he had been able to prevent all his buddies from speculating
that Monica was delusional as well as not pretty.

Anyway, from what I see, it really isn't possible to keep
witnesses from lying in these sex harassment cases. It
all boils down to "he said - she said." Nobody can prove
a thing, except the FBI. God knows I'm going to lie like
a dog next time I'm in court! I think Clinton's deceptive
statements in the Jones deposition show good judgement.
Since how he started out with Monica was identical to
what Paula accused him of, it would have damaged his
case to let Monica say the truth. But he protected himself
from actual perjury, and that is where the good judgement
lies. Of course he may end up arguing the call with a
judge. I'm sure a smart set of lawyers like him and his
spouse are not going to get caught in an obvious trap
like perjury.

I've been reading Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the
Roman Empire.
They were a lot less formal in how
they chose their leaders. I'm sure a detail like an obvious
felony wouldn't have stopped Theodosius (or Hitler) from
staying in power! Bill's the Commander in Chief of the
world's most powerful armed forces! That beats the
praetorian guard any day. All he needs to do is hang tight.
Nobody is going to drag him away from the presidency
as long as he's got his finger on that button. The sex
adict/harassment stuff will just blow away, eventually,
and his party has enough of the senate to stop an
impeachment vote.

And there are advantages to being two-faced as hell.
Our allies are sure to be impressed with our leader's ability to
read multiple meanings into legal documents. This means
we can make agreements where they see it their way, and
we see it our way. Everybody gets what they want! You
can eliminate long give and take negotiations. Instead, we
just take. Of course sometimes later disagreements
are a problem, but mostly that stuff doesn't matter anyway,
and Bill does have his finger on that little button! I'm sure
Alaric would have approved.
