And I found this "Headline Article" interesting on the link you providedbelizetimes.com UDP land scam cancelled Belize City, September 17, 1998 In its 1998-2003 Strike 3 Manifesto , the PUP stated: "Land is a matter that is uniquely important to people's lives and cultures, and the time is now to stop playing politics with the people's resources and establish clear and fair policies and practices for their management and conservation". Not yet one month into its term of office , the New PUP Government is already making good on this commitment to the Belizean people. The Belize Times has learnt that on Tuesday, September 15, 1998 the PUP Cabinet took a firm decision instructing and authorizing Minister of Natural Resources Johnny Briceo to revoke the shameless and disgraceful sale of Rendezvous Caye by the UDP Government on June 2, 1998 to Mr. Louis Anthony Leslie for the sum of $7,000.00. Belizeans were justifiably outraged when they learned of this scandalous act by former Minister of Natural Resources Eduardo "Dito" Juan who signed Minister's Fiat Grant No. 507 of 1998 transferring the beautiful and pristine coral reef island into private hands. The new PUP Government with its progressive and competent Minister of Natural Resources has moved quickly to ensure that all Belizeans will be able to enjoy the wonders of Rendezvous Caye. In related news, the Ministry of Natural Resources has also indicated its intention to cancel the lease of the parking lot in downtown Belize City which was given by the UDP government to Dr. Stanley Hoy in April of this year. This too had outraged many Belizeans, particularly those well acquainted with the nightmares of parking in downtown Belize City. The PUP, along with the Belize City Council, has long felt that this area would be ideal for a multi-storey indoor parking facility which would serve to greatly ease this dire parking situation. As a part of its comprehensive review of land grabs and give-aways by the desperate UDP government, the PUP has also uncovered the equally disgraceful sale of 200 acres of prime land next to the Sarteneja airstrip by the UDP government to former candidate and UDP stalwart Michael Godoy for the unconscionable sum of $13,000.00. This egregious wrong must also be corrected. It is noteworthy that in each of these cases the new Government has made it clear that there will be no arbitrary cancellation or revocation, but where possible Government will endeavor to dialogue with the relevant party to ensure a fair and appropriate settlement. The PUP Government is sending an early message, loud and clear for all to see and hear. The old way of doing business at the Ministry of Natural Resources is now behind us. The corrupt and abusive practices of the past are over. Belize's natural resources will be protected and preserved for future generations to come and all land transactions must be conducted in an atmosphere of transparency and accountability. Let us hear Dean Barrow and the UDP defend these scandalous give-aways and land grabs. The UDP presided over five years of scandal and corruption at the Ministry of Natural Resources. It is now time for a new and better way.
