Goldman continues to buy....why do you think?

Yahoo Post......
<<

The Cisco news should have made Ciena tank today. The stock held very well. Goldman and Merill were buying into
the selloff.

I am buying every dip. Things have quited down a bit and Goldman and Merill have backed off, but the early morning
buying is another tipoff.

Look for more buying from Goldman near the close. >>

Could not have said it better. When you see major investment banker firms buying...there is a reason. There is nothing wrong with Chambers sharing Cisco merger philisophies. Good for him & his stockholders.

Now we have been hearing "a rumor" of a contract with Bell South & a Goldman meeting (with Cien) on the Oct 8th. Can anyone share any facts around these two events?

You simply can't compare ASND's $800M buyout of SRA to a $2-3B buyout of CIEN. CIEN has no parts to sell. Given ASND's recent (6-9 months) total focus on providing shareholder value, and earnings consistency (ala CSCO), there is no way they will entertain this large an acquisition on an unhealthy company.

Besides, ASND will be bought by LU soon, and will get there DWDM that way. :)

Why would Ascend acquire Ciena? Lucent is going to buy Ascend shortly after Oct 1 (I speculate). Lucent already has DWDM solutions in-house, although mainly long-haul product. If Lucent acquires Ascend, and wants to have a good metro DWDM product, then grabbing CIEN might make sense. But how would the CIEN-CSCO IP over DWDM joint work progress if Lucent snapped up CIEN? You get my point, very unlikely that Ascend will grab CIEN, IMO.

pass pass,
The "serious shortfalls" statement is taken out of context. To paraphrase, he said that it was a good company, but it had serious shortfalls for what CSCO looks for in an acquisition. Key to this was the difficulty in integrating a large company that is not in the same geographic location. Chambers did not 'dis' CIEN at all, just said that it didn't meet his buying criteria.
